Does anyone know any good restaurants in the area of the state championships?

New Preston
The two races at New Preston are the longest trips of the season. The setting at Lake Waramaug is special in good weather and a sloshy, muddy mess in rain. Let's hope for good weather, and if not, bring some extra clothes for the ride home. The trip takes about 2.5 hours and I'm ready for a good cup of coffee and something to eat by the time we reach Middletown. My favorite coffee stop in Middletown has the best name of any coffee shop I know. Javapalooza ( say the name aloud a few times ) is on Main Street and a very nice stop for coffee. It's a relaxing place with a couple of tables on the sidewalk and plenty of comfortable seats inside. Good espresso here to keep you awake for the rest of the ride. It will be open for the later Saturday ride, but pack your own coffee for the Connecticuts on the following Sunday because they won't be open that early.
While everyone else dozes off for the rest of the ride, enjoy the scenery. I don't get up to that part of the state except for these races and I enjoy the ride. As you close in on the race location look for The Pantry in Washington Depot in back of a little shopping plaza called Titus Corner. This place is a very nice gourmet shop with good sandwiches and other prepared foods. If you are early, have a seat and eat there. If you want to order to go for the race, order up front and don't forget the desserts. They are very good. We usually split a sandwich and a dessert at the races. If you want more picnic items, check out their cheese selection and other prepared foods to go. Also a good place to use the bathrooms before the rustic lake facilities. Again on the next Sunday, they will not be open, but a cafe named Marty's in the front of the shopping plaza was there and open last year. Very nice shop with good coffee and , of course, bathrooms. Also on Sunday, as the trip is MUCH earlier, you may be in the mood for a breakfast stop. Last year we found a local diner near the race that served very inexpensive breakfast named Bailey's Lunch. Take your first right after Marty's and Bailey's will be down on the right. If you continue past Bailey's to the races, go to end of street and take a left. You will take a right onto Route 45N to the lake. It's about a five minute ride.
A place that gets good reviews is Doc's Trattoria right at the lake. They have a good looking menu and thin crust pizza's. I may give it a try this week. www.docstrattoria.com
On the way home I suggest another stop in Middletown at Little Tibet on Main Street. The food is very good and the only Tibetan restaurant I know. To me the food is similar to Thai. Try the dumplings. www.littletibet.com
See you at the races.
